California closet transition from Summer to Fall

Southern California yearns for a crisp, orange-hued autumn that the east coast begins embodying come September. Southern California heat persists well into October with occasional tropical storms inviting humidity. During the tail end of summer, personal fashion can start to feel repetitive and lackluster.

Buying an entire new wardrobe may not be in the budget nor sustainable. However, I can almost bet there is something from your summer wardrobe that you can bring into fall by styling differently or pairing it with a piece you would not typically combine it with.

Below I have styled pieces from my own closet that I would consider my summer wardrobe, but reimagined them into some future fall outfits.

I chose common pieces that I believed others may have or can find a substitute for in their closet.

No need to break the bank or support fast-fashion retailers to have #SWAG this fall.

Tops

Crochet and Knit:

What was once your bathing suit cover up is now a layering piece that can keep you warm once the sun sets but will not overheat you during the day.

Crochet and knit pieces can weave into your fall wardrobe by styling the breathable piece with a turtle neck or patterned long sleeve t-shirt.

Tank Tops

Layering multiple tank tops is so in right now. Layering them on top of t-shirts or long sleeves can add more texture to the outfit while aiding to weather practicality.

No matter the strap thickness, I think this is such a chic way of utilizing distinct pieces. Don't be afraid to play around with layers and style the tank top both under and on top of the long sleeve for a different look. Long sleeves with different neck lines can transform the look into multiple looks.

Tube Tops

This step involves adding a scarf for a cute shawl-like vibe. If you have a shrug this can totally work but the scarf brings a different style than a shrug that is a little more unique.

Below I attached a video demonstration of a few different ways the scarf can revamp a simple tube top.

Bottoms

Micro Shorts

Don’t retire these yet! Fun, patterned tights or leggings can provide another layer of contrast to the outfit and shield your legs from goosebumps later.

Long skirts and button ups

Using button ups as long skirts is also super ‘in’ right now and I think it is perfect for fall as flannel patterns begin surfacing. Detachable and able to be worn open with a slit, revealing tights or shorts, or buttoned all the way down for a long, flowy look.

Jeans and scarves

A classic scarf belt is a choice you can never go wrong with, however, scarves, as we know, have multiple purposes. Styling it like a skirt on jeans adds an overlay of knit, sequence or tassels to a simple pair of denim.

Accesories

Hats

A sun blocker come day and head warmth fall night. This one seems a little self explanatory. LOL.

Adding pins or scarves to hats is an optional choice of extra glamour.

Finger-less gloves

I love the hand movement freedom of fingerless gloves. The ability to use your phone, grip a drink and look cool, makes me want to style fingerless gloves with a t-shirt and lots of bracelets and rings.

Fingerless gloves add a texture to a simple outfit and are one of the cheapest accessories in my opinion. I never buy fingerless gloves, I make them. Target or Walmart carry gloves for about $3 to $5, and this ensures the length of finger-less-ness is on your own terms.

High socks and leg warmers

When wearing shorts, high socks and leg warmers can act as pant legs. Balancing internal body temperature is important during the fall with its bipolar nature, so shorts and leg warmers correspond perfectly.
